COURSE MATERIALS

Band in a Box is one recommended audio supplement to generate rhythm section accompaniments outside of class.  By using this software, students have control over style, tempo, chord progressions, form, and transposition.  Band in a Box also contains a device for burning these accompaniments to a CD for practice purposes.

The Jamey Aebersold series may also prove to be a valuable resource for students.
The books most useful for class are:

Vol. 3 The II/V7/I Progression
Vol. 16 Turnarounds, Cycles & II/V7?s
Vol. 24 Major and Minor
Vol. 26 Scale Syllabus
Vol. 42 Blues in All Keys

The following exercises constitute the written resources for the improvisation element of Jazz Band and are designed to develop basic skills in beginning improvisers.

Exercise One - Tonality

As beginning instrumentalists we are taught to connect visual signals with auditory responses and physical technique through scales and arpeggios.  Technique books become the next part of this progression.  These books contain exercises that break scales up into patterns.  The beginning improviser must connect these exercises with the sounding chord to discover the value of each note as melodic material.  Books on jazz improvisation show other scales and patterns that may be performed on each chord.  When assimilating a new scale or mode, the traditional scales, arpeggios, and technical patterns will prove to be a wonderful starting point for practice.  The final step is improvisation and should be achieved in each practice session.

The Exercise One - Tonality PDFs represent the chord changes that go along with the accompanying mp3.
