Undecided Majors Program

It's more than okay to be undeclared! In fact:

  • Approximately 25% of all students are undecided when they begin college
  • Approximately 80% of students change majors at least once before choosing the major with which they graduate

Being an undeclared student offers many benefits, including:

  • Allowing you to really look into different areas to see where your interests lie
  • Giving you a chance to become an engaged student, in charge of your own education
  • Assisting you in providing insights into your own talents and learning style
  • Engaging you in opportunities to educate yourself for life and prepare you for a lifetime of jobs and activities

Who stands to benefit from participation in the Undeclared Majors Program? Students who:

  • Have no idea what they want to pursue
  • Want to do everything
  • Want to explore all options available to them.

The Undeclared Majors Program at Concordia University, St. Paul is designed to assist you with the exploration of various careers that complement your personal interests and values. Particular emphasis is placed on linking you to an academic major that corresponds with your initial career plans. A three-step process is employed: advising & assessment, exploration and decision-making.

Phase One: Advising & Assessment

Student Transitions Advising: You will work with a Student Transitions Advisor, who can help you with both academic and career advising. Not only will your advisor assist you in exploring majors and researching careers, but your advisor can also help students map out college coursework that allows them to explore majors and graduate in a timely manner.

The Student Transitions Advisor teaches a course, which all undeclared students are strongly encouraged to enroll in, entitled Career Exploration and Assessment (SSS150). This course will help you assess how prepared you are for academic and career planning. Through this course, you will complete some of the following assessments and activities:

  • Interest and personality inventories, including the Newly Revised Strong Interest Inventory and Myers Briggs Type Indicator
  • Development of an individual career plans using the GPS LifePlan, which guides students in the following areas:
    • Career - focusing on obtaining a successful and fulfilling career
    • Education - focusing on achieving a college degree from Concordia
    • Personal - focusing on becoming a well-rounded individual

Phase Two: Exploration

The intermediate phase will provide you the opportunity to experience and reflect upon any or all of the following:

  • Interview a family member whose career interests you
  • Investigate potential fields of study
  • Visit the Career Services website to see research various career fields and discuss your findings with your advisor

Phase Three: Decision Making

In the final phase, emphasis is placed on observation of ?real world? career roles that interest you. You will be encouraged to complete one or more of the following activities:

  • Job shadowing
  • Interview with a professional in your community
  • Internship
  • Part-time work
  • Community service work
