Welcome to the CSP Music Department!Greetings from the Concordia University Music Department!
We have a vibrant, caring, and joyful community that makes music at a high level,
and we would be delighted to help you become a part of it. Our goal is to provide
opportunities for musical excellence in which each individual is nurtured. We hope
you enjoy exploring the information, photos, and music on this website, which will
give you a taste of the excellent music-making at CSP. We invite you to visit us in
person, for a concert, recital, rehearsal, or to meet our faculty and students.
We offer three music majors--liberal arts, music education and church music--
and a music minor (popular with students pursuing a major outside of music.) Our
faculty has six full-time and eighteen part-time teachers, drawn from the finest
teachers and performers in the musically rich Twin Cities.
In our vocal area, we have four teachers of voice, regular studio classes,
Minnesota NATS competition in the fall, and a bi-annual Opera Workshop in
the spring. We also collaborate with the CSP Theatre Department in an annual
musical theatre production. Our four choirs provide a range of opportunities:
Christus Chorus (award-winning touring concert choir, including featured
performances in Africa, Poland, Germany, and with the Minnesota Orchestra),
Jubilate (mixed voice, auditioned chapel choir),
Shades of Harmony Gospel Choir (student-faculty-staff community Gospel choir),
and the Vocal Jazz Ensemble (6-12 auditioned upper class singers).
In our instrumental area, we have eleven private lesson teachers for strings,
woodwinds, brass, and percussion, and these ensembles:
Concert Band (touring wind/percussion ensemble),
Jazz Band (16-20 piece group),
Handbell Ensemble (14 players, performs on & off campus),
String Ensemble (chamber string group),
Pit Orchestra (for musical theatre productions),
Christmas Concert Orchestra (students/faculty/staff),
Chapel Band (worship ensemble of singers & instrumentalists),
and small ensembles for woodwinds, brass, percussion, and guitar.
In our keyboard area, we have three teachers of piano, organ, and harpsichord.
Concordia has six pipe organs on campus, including the 43-rank Schlicker tracker-
action organ. Concordia has been an all-Steinway piano school since 2002.
The Buetow Music Center houses our department, including the beautifully
equipped 500-seat recital hall, two large rehearsal rooms, three classrooms, two
computer/MIDI labs, practice rooms, and faculty studios, equipped with
SMARTMUSIC accompanying/recording technology.
We have music scholarships available for new and returning students. We encourage
ALL prospective Concordia students with musical interests (regardless of major)
to apply for these scholarships; they are merit-based and can significantly enhance
your financial aid package. For an on-line scholarship application form click here.
